Tips to Increase Your Laptop Battery Life

A lot of us spend hours on our laptops every single day. Whether it’s for work or for entertainment, we often rely on our laptops. With the advancements in technology, laptops are now better than ever, with so many new features for us to enjoy and improved laptop insurance and warranty available.

How to Increase Laptop Battery Life?

Batteries are also more powerful now, but we still struggle to keep our laptops going throughout the day without having to plug into a socket. Here are some tips and tricks you can follow to get longer battery life for your laptops:

  • Reduce the brightness of the screen

The screen is responsible for taking up the most amount of battery. It needs the power to keep working all day and maintain a clear and bright display. Only turning down the brightness of the screen can reduce the amount of battery being used greatly, and add 30 more minutes to your battery life.

  • Battery Care

Battery care is very crucial for maintaining your laptop and battery for years. It is important to keep in mind to take off the charger once the laptop is completely charged and if it starts turning hot. A maximum battery and heat exposure can cause serious damage to the battery. It is always advised to store your laptop in a cool and ventilated place to avoid heat. Some laptops now, like Dell, have a function where the charging turns off when it reaches 100%, but it is still recommended to manually remove the charger.

Another thing to remember is to not let your battery get to 0%. It is recommended that you keep your battery between 40 and 80%, as a complete discharge can cause damage to the battery.

  • Battery Replacement

No matter how much attention you pay to your batteries, they are not made to last a whole lifetime. They are considered as consumables and degrade with time. It has been seen that with several years of use, a battery is usually left with 50% of its original capacity. It is recommended that the battery be replaced after that time, or if you notice a decrease in the battery lifetime.

Laptop warranty or laptop insurance usually does not cover battery, and a separate replacement needs to be bought.

  • Power Settings

There are certain settings on our laptops that also affect our battery life. Windows laptops like Dell, have power settings where a power plan can be selected. A power saver setting can be selected to reduce the amount of battery that is being consumed.

There are more advanced settings available if you choose to adjust things according to your preferences, for example, you can choose when the system hibernates, for maximum power saving.

  • Connectivity Settings

Connectivity options like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth also take up a lot of power, so it is always advised to disable both when they are not in use. Modern-day laptops featuring Dell laptop warranty have an easy switch or key to turn the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on and off, so it is only turned on when you are using it and can be quickly turned off with a simple click.

  • Disconnect unnecessary peripherals

A great feature of laptops is to be able to connect our various external devices to view it on our laptops, like DVDs, USBs, or Hard Disks. But, it is important to remember all these devices draw extra power from your battery as well.

A laptop needs extra power to read the external device and perform the necessary functions, every time it is turned on. So, another simple technique to increase battery life is to unplug all the external peripherals that are not in use and only connect them when you need to.

  • Buy an external battery/ power bank

In addition to replacing your existing battery, there is also an option of buying a spare external battery. Various external universal laptop batteries can be connected with almost any laptop. You just need to keep this battery charged, and if your laptop battery is running low, you can just connect it to your laptop and it will charge the internal battery.

This is a great option to have and carry with you when you know you have a long day and need to keep your laptop alive. USB-C power banks can be used to charge modern-day Dell Laptops.

  • Memory Management

Another common mistake we all make is to let many tabs and applications open and running. This is another reason to make us lose our battery at a faster pace, as the applications and browsers keep drawing on power to run these pages even when we are not using them. It is always advised to keep only those programs and pages open that are required and close them once you are done using them.
